- 1). Look for artificial replications of tree varieties that are often grown in homes. Popular indoor trees include rubber trees, ornamental orange trees and bonsai trees. Artificial versions of these are available. Don't choose a variety that is unlikely to grow in a home or doesn't exist in nature. It will not look believable in the home. Stick to believable specimens unless you are trying to make a statement with unusual trees.
- 2). Examine the leaves or needles of the artificial tree. Look for colors true to nature. Any flowers should have graduated color like real petals, and not be one solid color. Tug on the needles or leaves to make sure they don't come off the branch easily. Look for leaves that have a tight fabric weave and could be taken for real plants at a distance. Avoid plants with frayed edges or loose threads.
- 3). Select trees that don't come in a pot if you are ordering online or if you already have a pot to put them in. Potted trees are much heavier to ship and the pot doesn't always fit with your decor. Choose potted trees only if the pot works for your decor and you are buying locally.
