How to Clean Rod Ends

    • 1). Ensure the engine is cool and the battery is disconnected before taking disassembling engine parts.

    • 2). Remove carbon buildup from the pistons and cylinder sleeve by wiping them down with crocus cloth. Do this before removing the rod heads.

    • 3). Remove the lower rod bearing nuts with a socket wrench. Push the piston upwards and gently tap the rods to loosen and pull them out.

    • 4). Scrub the rod and its bearings with dish soap and water. Use a toothbrush or small scrub brush to scrub. For heavy buildup and corrosion, scrub the heads with mineral spirits before using dish soap and water.

    • 5). Allow the soapy water to sit on the heads for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water.

    • 6). Apply clean oil to the piston rings, rod bearing caps and cylinder.

    • 7). Reassemble the rods by matching the number on the rods to the number on the bearing caps.
