- 1). Fill a plastic tub with lukewarm water and set it outside the door that you usually take your dog out. Also put a rug near the tub so your dog can wipe and dry its paws off. To prevent your floors or carpet from getting damp, keep a towel by the door so you can dry your dog's paws better.
- 2). After your dog has done its business, have him sit by the tub of water. Physically place a paw into the tub of water and praise the dog. Then show the dog that you have treats and drop one of the treats into the bottom of the tub. This should entice the dog to use its paw and try to get to the treat. Praise your dog every time it puts its hands in the water.
- 3). If your dog doesn't follow the treat into the tub, physically put the dog's paws in the water. Follow Steps 2 and 3 for all four paws. Be consistent and use this process every single time you take your dog outside. It will help them develop a routine.
- 4). Tell the dog to lie down on the carpet. This will help get residual water off of its paws. Hold the treat in front of the dog while she's lying down so that she crawls toward the treat and ends up wiping her back paws off, too. You might have to tell the dog to lie down more than once, but make sure you praise the dog and give it a treat after her paws are dry.
- 5). Use a small hand towel to thoroughly dry your dog's paws off. This will help prevent water and dirt from getting on your floor, carpet, bedding and other furniture.
