Tips for Repairing Your Pottery

Many people have pottery that has been handed down throughout various generations.
When one of these pieces is mishandled or accidentally falls and breaks, it can be disheartening to lose such a precious piece of art.
However, if you are unwilling to part with the pottery, you can always opt to fix it depending upon the condition that it is in.
Fixing pottery can be a bit tricky, but if you have patience and the ability to piece it back together, it is worth the effort - especially if it is a cherished piece.
Supplies You Will Need There are a few things that you will need to have handy when preparing to fix your pottery piece
  • Adhesive- You can use fast drying epoxy, or another similar fast bonding agent.
You want something that will bond to ceramics without any fuss.
  • Gloves- working with adhesives and modeling clay will require the use of gloves to prevent any staining or accidental gluing of the fingers.
  • Modeling Clay- this will need to be in the color of your original pottery piece.
If you cannot find the exact color, mix a few colors together to try to match the hue as best as you can.
Fixing the Pottery Once you have gathered your supplies along with your broken pottery pieces, you are ready to begin the repairing process.
  • Ensure that the pottery pieces are clean.
Clean them with a cleaning agent designed for pottery pieces so that you do not risk damaging the finish.
The pieces must be clean otherwise the adhesive may not work.
  • Use the adhesive to bond the pieces together, ensuring beforehand that the pieces match each other.
If you have significant breaks, you will want to put the pottery back together much like you would a puzzle.
  • Use the modeling clay to fill in any gaps.
This happens fairly often with pottery breaks, sometimes we just cannot find all of the pieces.
When this happens, you will need the modeling clay - choose one that is similar to the pottery piece - to fill in the gaps where you are missing chips.
  • Allow your pottery to cure - the adhesive and modeling clay will have different curing times depending on the brand you use.
Make sure you place the pottery up where it is out of reach of pets or small hands.
The last thing you need while the pottery is curing is for it to be broken again.
It may take a few tries, but before you know it your piece of art should be repaired - at least as best as it can be.
