Do I Use Gloss or Semigloss Paint on the Exterior of My House?

    Sheen

    • Sheen, when referred to paint, is the amount of light paint reflects. Sheens vary from low to high. Low sheens are found in flat finishes, where paint dries into a dull sheen and reflects little to no light. High-gloss sheens have a very shiny appearance and the tendency to give walls a plastic look. Semigloss exterior paints still reflect light and give finishes a shiny appearance without resembling plastic. Semigloss finishes are very similar to glossy ones, only their sheen is not as bright.

    Preparation

    • Preparing a surface for new paint is important for any sheen. It should be washed and free of contaminants, such as dirt and other debris. For a professional finish, it should also be free of any deep scratches, holes or dents and primed, if necessary. Semigloss finishes help hide minor imperfections on the surface, so you can avoid small repairs and only have to wash and primer the exterior before you paint it. A glossy sheen, though, makes even small damage very visible, creating more work in preparing the surface for paint.

    Use

    • Modern home exteriors are commonly covered in siding, but others are made from brick, wood and other building materials. Some surfaces, such as wood, are very porous and need multiple coats of paint for full coverage. Siding is different. It is a nonporous surface that does not require heavy amounts of paint. Semigloss paints have a thicker coverage than glossy finishes, leaving you less work in applying several layers of paint.

    Durability

    • Exterior paints are more durable than interior paints, and are made to withstand outdoor elements. Semigloss and glossy sheens are very similar in durability, though glossy sheens slightly more durable than semigloss ones. They both repel moisture, a significant characteristic for exterior paint, and are resistant to dirt and stains. Both finishes are easily washable and hold up well to outside weather conditions, such as rain, snow or extreme heat. Whether you use a semigloss or glossy paint, use a high-quality exterior paint to ensure a long lasting finish.
