How to Donate a Car in Need of Repair in Ohio

    • 1). Choose an organization for your car donation. Most charities in Ohio do not accept junk cars directly, which means you need to use a third party that allows you to select a charity to benefit from your donation. Some of these organizations include Donation Line, Donate Car Online, Outreach Center, Donate Junk Car and Kars 4 Kids (see Resources).

    • 2). Use the online contact form on the organization's website, or call the organization directly if you prefer. You can usually find the contact number on the website as well. You will need to be ready to give your car make, model, year and the address where the vehicle is located.

    • 3). Set up an appointment for the car to be picked up by the organization. A driver will come to tow away the vehicle for you.

    • 4). Take the license plate off the vehicle and remove all of your personal items from the car. If you cannot find the title for the car, you need to get a duplicate title from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles by visiting a location near you (see Resources). As of December 2010, the fee is $15.

    • 5). Sign the title of the car so that ownership is transferred and give it to the tow driver when he arrives for the vehicle. Before the driver leaves with the car, you will be given a temporary donation receipt. Once the organization sells the vehicle, you will get a revised receipt by mail that shows the amount for which the junk car was sold, which is the amount you can claim on your taxes.
