One of the joys of a trip to Provence is a visit to the colorful markets that take place all around the region.
Food markets are often held daily in many towns - they're wonderfully fragrant places selling tempting regional produce from super-fresh vegetables and fruit to olives, honey and herbes de provence.
And then there are the more general markets selling an assortment of different handicrafts - colorful fabrics, perfumed soaps and locally-made ceramics.
These are usually held weekly, and I never tire of pootling around looking at the work from the local artisans.
My two favorite markets are the ones in Aix and St Rémy.
The main market in Aix takes place around the Place des Prêcheurs and Place de Verdun on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Everywhere gets really crowded on market day mornings, but Bellegarde car park, on the northern side of Aix's equivalent of the north circular is usually a good bet, and it's only a short walk from there.
Market day is Wednesday in St Rémy, and it's really worth a visit...
The market sprawls through the older part of town, but the main part is just behind the Church in front of the town hall.
I can't help you on the parking front in St Rémy - you'll just have to take your chances.
But it's certainly worth the effort! But there are markets all over Provence on weekday mornings, so if you can't make it to either of these destinations, I'm sure you'll run across a market at some stage during your visit.
