- 1). Determine the direction of light for the scenery. For example, morning light will cast long shadows and in the afternoon light, the shadows will almost disappear. Most artists will use the morning light for the interesting shadows it creates.
- 2). Start shading by adding the lightest value to the shaded areas of the scenery.
- 3). Increase the shading by going through the drawing and assign values to the shaded areas.
- 4). Define a focal point by creating contrast between the lightest and the darkest values. For example, this could be where the sun streams through the trees.
