Street Dance Teaching - Exercise to Music Qualification Vs Specialist Teacher Training

Street Dance teachers need to have specialist teacher training in their specific field of expertise.
If you want to be a doctor, you don't train to be a Vet.
If you want to be a judge, you don't train to be a police officer.
In the same vein, if you want to teach Street Dance you need to get specialist training in the area of expertise that you want to teach.
Now the reputable companies that offer Exercise to Music qualifications are indeed recognised and worthwhile qualifications.
What is important to know is that they are not dance teacher training programmes.
They are programmes that will teach you how to teach general classes where the goal and focus is on exercising and doing that exercise to music.
Their focus is not dance and they certainly won't give you the skills to specialise in teaching it, as that is not their area of expertise.
So if you take an Exercise to Music Qualification with the goal of wanting to teach Street / Hip Hop, in my opinion that will not give you the detail, experience or training you will need to start up your own classes or work for schools, councils and colleges.
By doing a general and non-specialised programme, you will not feel confident enough about running a Street Dance class to be able to go out and do it.
Now before we go any further, you need to know that I am biased in my view.
I have been in the industry for the last 18 years, I have taught thousands of people how to dance and I now specialise in helping existing and new teachers, how to teach and communicate effectively with their students.
My goal of writing this article is to make you aware that there are specialised trainings out there and it is always better to be specialised than to gain general knowledge and experience.
Employers and customers always look for the expert, so be the expert teacher not someone who has general training.
Remember we can't be all things, to all people.
It is better to specialise.
So if you want to be a Street Dance teacher, learn how to do that specifically.
In conclusion, I believe that your money would be better spent developing your own dance skills and getting them to a standard where you are proficient enough at the skill to be able to teach it to someone else.
Attend as many street dance classes, workshops and master classes as you can.
Then look for a teacher training company that can give you those teaching skills that you'll need to share your passion with others.
