If we want to learn about ADHD, we might well spend a lot of time running from site to site and not getting really anywhere.
Every site seems to say that they have the definitive answer about ADHD and above all, how it should be treated.
How do we approach the problem of treating ADHD? First we need to learn about ADHD and get the facts and forget all the hype put out by pharmaceutical companies who are definitely selling something.
The first fact is that ADHD is not caused by environmental pollution which ranges from lead poisoning, toxicity of certain chemicals such as the phthalates (chemical plasticizers) which is found in some children's toys, shower curtains and cling film for preserving food.
There is some evidence that there is a higher level of phthalates in ADHD children's urine samples but if you are really worried about that, the best thing to do is to buy toys which have the PETE label and avoid wrapping food in cling film when microwaving it.
As regards this type of poisoning and whether it really could have an impact on ADHD or even be a cause of it, we need to be sensible.
We can avoid processed foods as much as we can and go for as much fresh food as possible.
The same rule applies when we are worried about preservatives, or too much sugar, additives and colourings.
Going for fruit and veg smoothies is an easy way round the problem.
Stocking up on healthy snacks from the health food shop is another approach we can take.
As regards learning about ADHD meds, we again need to be sensible and look at the facts.
One of the great ADHD experts, William Pelham, from the University of Buffalo has stated quite clearly that his research shows that the effects of ADHD meds may well wear off after about three years.
An then what happens? Nobody seems to know but now experts seem to be warming to the idea that some sort of child behavior modification is the answer because that will last for the whole of childhood and stand the teenager in good stead right through the difficult adolescent years.
If you really want to learn about ADHD, why not seek out some accurate unbiased information about what are the alternative treatments available? This seems a much more sensible alternative than opting for powerful mind altering drugs which are nothing more than well disguised amphetamines.
In order to shorten your learning curve, I have set up a website outlining all the alternatives available.
Why not check this out and learn about ADHD for your child's sake?
