- 1). Sprinkle talcum powder over the photo's surface, if the photo has a glossy finish. Rub the talcum powder evenly over the photo to dull the finish. After the talcum powder has coated the photo, wipe off any excess powder.
- 2). Fill a fountain pen with India ink. You can choose whatever size pen head you desire. Take your time to draw on top of the photo's image. You can use simple lines, dots, cross hatch or other patterns to make your drawing.
- 3). Fill a tray with water. Make sure the tray is big enough for the photo to sit flat in it, and use enough water to completely cover the photo. Add iodine to the water until it becomes murky. Lower amounts of iodine will erase the photo's image, but higher amounts of iodine will speed up the process.
- 4). Take the photo out of the water and iodine mix once the photo's image is completely gone. Only your drawing and a blue tinge from the iodine should remain. Fill another tray of similar size with photo developing fixer. Dilute the fixer with water, per the instructions on the bottle. Remove the photo once the blue from the iodine comes off the photo, leaving just your pen marks on a white background.
- 5). Rinse the photo with cold water for about half an hour. This is necessary to completely remove any developing fixer solution residue still left on the photo. Do not touch the pen marks on the photo, or you will smear them. Put the photo, with the pen marks facing up, on a towel. Wait for water to completely evaporate off the photo.
