- 1). Purchase a radio frequency detector at a spy and gadget or electronics store (see Resources). You can purchase one for $100 to $500, as of 2011, depending on the model and brand that you purchase.
- 2). Turn on the RF detector. Move it around the area where you suspect the hidden camera is located. You will know if you are near a spy camera when the detector begins to beep and a red light begins flashing. The closer you get to the camera, the faster the device will beep. Once you are directly in front of the camera, it will give you a steady high-pitched squeal. More sophisticated and expensive scanners have the added option of using a silent detection mode so as not to alert the person spying on you.
- 3). Probe the area a couple of times if you don't find anything on the first pass. Some spy cameras broadcast intermittently and do not send a continuous signal.
