All Pools Are Not Created Equal: An Intro To Different Pool Types

Choosing your perfect swimming pool design is a key part of the pool design process.

As a first step, you will want to take some time to share your requirements and preferences with your swimming pool builder. It is important to do this first so that you will have an idea what kinds of pool designs fit your budget and other needs, such as space. Planning in this initial stage will go a long way in minimizing your frustration and maximizing your enjoyment down the line.

Pool builders and pool designers will tell you that there are basically three types of pools:

1. Concrete

2. Vinyl

3. Fiberglass

Concrete Swimming Pools
Concrete swimming pools are based on one of two materials: shotcrete or gunite. These terms refer to the kinds of materials that are used to create the pool's steel framework.

Gunite is pumped to the pool's structural frame, while shotcrete is sprayed. Your swimming pool builder or pool contractor will offer you a finish of either plaster, colored plaster, marble or pebble.

Since concrete pools are custom-built, they offer you flexibility when it comes to design. You can stick with a basic or standard layout, or you can be adventurous and ask your pool builder about "bells and whistles" like spas or what they call "step waterfalls."

Vinyl Swimming Pools
Pool builders refer to pools with vinyl liners installed inside their walls (to reinforce the steel and other materials) as vinyl pools. The walls are actually pre-manufactured and then set to stand on the ground. After the area is excavated and the walls are installed, the vinyl liner goes in.

Similar to concrete pools, pool owners have flexibility with vinyl liner pools because they can be used in any custom design. Care, however, must be taken to ensure that the vinyl is protected from any puncture or piercing.

Fiberglass Pools
Fiberglass pools are assembled at the factory and then shipped to the pool location and installed with a crane. They are basically pre-fabricated shells made of fiberglass.

Builders will dig a hole and level it, and then put in the fiberglass. Waiting time for completion of the pool is relatively short, compared to concrete or vinyl liner pools.
