- 1). Make sure you have a standard size crib. Most cribs and baby mattresses are a standard size, but if for some reason you have a crib that is a different size, you will need to find a baby mattress that will fit the crib. This will make your search for the perfect baby mattress harder, but is very uncommon.
- 2). Decide if you want a foam or innerspring mattress. There are benefits to both types of mattresses and it is really a matter of personal preference. Pne has not been proven to be better than the other. The most important aspect of deciding between the two is to make sure that it is made of good quality.
- 3). Decide what is important to you. If you want a long warranty and a waterproof mattress, make sure that your selection reflects that. Many baby mattresses today have lengthy warranties and most are waterproof. Knowing in advance what is important to you will help narrow down baby mattresses and make your selection easier.
- 4). Look for a firm mattress. Research has determined that firmer mattresses are better for babies and help to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Physically press down on the mattress and make sure that it is firm. It may not seem comfortable, but it is the safest option when selecting a baby mattress.
- 5). Shop around for prices. One store may have the exact baby mattress you're looking for at a significantly lower price than another.
