How to Identify Windows XP Start-up Programs

    • 1). Click on "Start," then "Run."

    • 2). Type "msconfig.exe" in the "Open" field. Press the "Enter" key.

    • 3). Click on the "Startup" tab.

    • 4). Scan each column, beginning with the name of the "Startup Item" and the "Manufacturer." Some programs will clearly indicate what they are, while others will show you only "name.exe" under "Startup Item." Verify these entries by viewing the "Command" column. Write down any "name.exe" programs.

    • 5). Research any of the "name.exe" files that you cannot identify on the Internet. There are several websites that specialize in identifying file names, such as UniBlue's Process Library and File.net.
