More than two decades ago, the principles of family-centered care were first espoused in pediatrics. Since that time, those principles have been extended to the care of patients of all ages, in all settings of care. There is growing recognition of the important role that families play as members of care teams – enhancing quality of care and safety for children, adults, and the elderly. However, policy and practice must continue to evolve to strengthen effective partnerships with families. Pediatric nurses can play a significant role as change agents and champions within pediatric institutions and within larger healthcare systems as well.
