- 1). Wipe down the item with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove dust and debris.
- 2). Don a face mask.
- 3). Spray the entire item with matte or satin spray paint. Apply two even coats. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly between coats and before proceeding.
- 4). Sand portions of the painted surface with a fine-grit sandpaper. Sand off some of the paint from the peaks, or high points, and other areas that are subject to wear, such as the edges of the item and corners of doors or drawers.
- 5). Wipe down the surface with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove dust from the sanding process.
- 6). Apply one or two coats of a clear matte or satin spray paint to seal the paint and to protect exposed wood that's peeking through the regions that were sanded.
