Dragon Ball Z Drawing Tutorials

    Creating the Head

    • The eyes and face are key to a Dragon Ball Z character

Dragon Ball Z characters have a truly distinct style to their faces. Characters from Dragon Ball Z have large heads, intense eyes and strong chins.

Draw the guideline of the head with a large oval that is wider at the top than the bottom. Add a chin with a "V" shape at the bottom or simply allow your oval shape to come to a point at the bottom. Draw a cross or "t" shape over the face to act as a facial guideline. You should use sideways triangles for the characteristic eyes of the dragon ball characters and place these on the horizontal facial guideline. The pupils are created with a small circle inside each eye. The eyebrows are made with either a thin diagonal line over each eye or a thin triangle. The nose should be created with a slightly diagonal "L" shape below the eyes. Create the mouth with a thin curved line under the nose. Erase the guidelines carefully.

Creating a Dragon Ball Z Body Frame

    • The frame will be the foundation for your character

The characters of the Dragon Ball Z universe are extremely dedicated martial artists. These characters have very disciplined and muscled bodies. It is important to make sure that all of your Dragon Ball Z characters have strong muscle definition.

To do this you must first create a frame to place the muscles on the body. Create the frame with a trapezoid for the chest with the top being wider than the bottom. The hips can be made with an upside down triangle. Create the arms and legs with lines coming off the chest and hips. The joints can be created with small ovals for the shoulders, knees and elbows. Create hands with ovals and feet with triangles.

    Adding Muscle to The Frame

    • Dragon Ball Z characters are very muscled

Add muscles to the frame using oblong football shaped ovals. Place one of these ovals at the upper right and left corner of the chest for shoulder muscles. Draw the biceps with an oval attached to the bottom of the shoulders. Create the triceps with a small, thinner oval behind the biceps. Add the forearm muscles with two smaller ovals. The pectoral muscles are added with square shaped ovals and the abdominal muscles are added with six square shaped ovals. The upper leg muscles are created with two large ovals over the leg guidelines. The calves are created with two smaller ovals.

    Adding Clothing, Hair and Color

    • Color and clothing help flesh out you character

Almost all Dragon Ball Z characters wear martial art jumpsuits. This can be drawn with a "V" shape across the chest for the color, a curved line at each shoulder and a sash across the waist. The pants are created with parallel lines around the outside of the leg that come to a curved point just above the ankles. Create hair with large curved triangles arranged over the the head. Ink all of the lines you wish to keep. Color the character using art markers. The heroes use orange jumpsuits with navy blue boots and sashes. The skin can be colored beige and the hair can range in color. Many characters have black hair while others have yellow or gray hair.
