Individuals with drug addiction--dependence on a street drug or medication--often require professional help in the form of support groups or an organized treatment (drug rehabilitation) program to treat their substance dependency. Depending on the severity and type of drug addiction, addicts may also require a substance withdrawal (detoxification) program to overcome their physical addiction. - The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)--an arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)--is a government agency whose stated mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities. SAMHSA's website offers a searchable directory of drug and alcohol rehabilitation treatment centers across the country. SAMHSA's Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator lists private and public facilities that are licensed, certified or otherwise approved for inclusion by their state substance abuse agency.
