How to Make a Liner Lock Folder

    • 1). Turn a 1-by-2-by-4-inch piece of high-density urethane foam on one of its 1-inch-wide edges. This piece of foam acts as the knife handle. Measure 1/2 inch below the top edge of the foam with a ruler. Mark the spot with a marker. Measure 1/2 inch above the bottom edge of the foam. Mark this spot with a marker.

    • 2). Carve out a 1/2-inch-wide by 1/2-inch-deep rectangle between the two marked spots with a straight-edge knife. Make this cut carefully. The foam handle now has a pocket for the blade.

    • 3). Bond one 1/8-by-2-by-4-inch polyethylene plastic sheet to the right-side exterior of the handle with permanent epoxy. Bond a second 1/8-by-2-by-4-inch polyethylene plastic sheet to the left-side exterior of the handle.

    • 4). Bond one 1/8-by-1-by-3 1/2-inch polyethylene plastic sheet to the inside of the pocket on the upper side. Bond a second 1/8-by-1-by-3 1/2-inch polyethylene plastic sheet to the inside of the pocket on the lower side.

    • 5). Slice 1/2-inch deep through the middle of the handle along its top edge.

    • 6). Draw a 1-by-3-inch blade on a piece of shipping-box cardboard using a pencil. Cut out the blade with a pair of scissors.

    • 7). Poke a hole through the base of the cardboard blade with the straight-edge knife. Slide the base of the blade into the foam slit. Insert a brass fastener into the top side of the foam handle through the blade hole and through the back side of the handle to attach the blade. The blade will now fold up and down.

    • 8). Boil 5 cups water and 1 cup flour in a pot for three minutes to create a paper mache mix. Allow the mix to cool for five minutes. Pour the cooled mix into a medium-size bowl.

    • 9). Soak a 1-by-3-inch newspaper strip in the paper mache mix. Press the strip into the handle. Continue until the entire handle is covered in newspaper strips that have been soaked in the mix. Avoid covering the blade or the pocket opening in the handle.

    • 10

Soak a 1-by-3-inch paper towel strip in the paper mache mix. Press the strip into the handle. Continue until the entire handle is covered in paper towel strips that have been soaked in the mix. Avoid covering the blade or the pocket opening in the handle. Allow the craft to dry for four hours.

    • 11

Coat the handle in black acrylic paint using a paintbrush. Coat the blade in metallic-colored spray paint. Allow the craft to dry for two hours before handling or displaying.
