Treatments for Nasal Allergies

    Air Filters

    • Use HEPA air filters in your home. They have the ability to trap 98% of the allergens in the air that are causing your nasal allergies. Once the allergens are gone, your nose will clear right up. They make portable HEPA filters that you can easily take from room to room. They also make bigger models that you can set in a central place in your home without having to keep moving it.

    Antihistamines

    • Antihistamines block the histamine that is causing your allergic reaction. That will stop all of the symptoms associated with your nasal allergies. You will still need to remove the source of the allergen in order to be completely freed of the nasal allergy. Benedryl is one of the most common antihistamines a person can take. Make sure you follow all of the dosing instructions on the package. Do not drive after you take it, as it can cause drowsiness.

    Steroid Nasal Spray

    • Your doctor can prescribe you a steroid nasal spray. The steroids will work to reduce the inflammation in your nasal cavity. Flonase, Nasonex and Rhinocort are the most commonly prescribed steroid nasal sprays. Shake your nasal spray before using it. Then pump it until you see a fine mist. Blow your nose and you are ready to use the nasal spray. Place the nozzle in your right nostril and hold your left nostril shut. Pump the spray and breath in at the same time. Now do the same with your left nostril. Repeat this procedure once per day unless your doctor tells you to do it two times per day. Steroid nasal sprays are not made to be used on a long-term basis.
