The Casio SK-1 is a sampling keyboard originally released in 1986 and is regarded as the first low-budget, low-fidelity sampler to become available to the general public. It offered the basics, such as the ability to play a 32-key keyboard and sample simple drumbeats, but Casio didn't want to make the keyboard too confusing for its users, so the company kept it simple. Additional models with additional features, such as the SK-2 and SK-5, were later released as the next generation models of the SK-1.

    Keyboard Layout

    • All models of the SK-1 series are equipped with 32 keys, built-in speakers, volume control, tempo control, tone control and a one-button mode selector. The mode selector allows you to choose between four playback modes -- normal, solo 1, solo 2 and chord. The "normal" setting gives you a four-tone polyphonic playback, while "solo 1" and "solo 2" offer multiphonic playback, complete with multi-track memory. The "chord" setting allows you to play with accompaniment of other sound effects and beats, complete with multi-track memory as well.

    Sampling

    • With a 9.38 kHz sampling frequency, the SK-1 allows playback of 1.4 seconds of samplings and can hold one customized sample that you record yourself. The sequencer on the keyboard has enough memory to hold and play back 400 steps (or keystrokes) of polyphonic programming, 99 steps of a chord sequence (the stroke of more than one note at a time) and 198 steps of two different voice samples. No permanent memory is available, so all custom samples and sequences are lost once the unit is powered off.

    Sound Effects

    • The SK-1 has five pulse code modulated (PCM) tones, which include piano, brass ensemble, trumpet, synth drums and voice. Three synth tones (flute, pipe organ and jazz) are also standard on the keyboard. All sounds are created using an 8-bit technology.
