- Above all other characteristics, flavor is what makes a good wine and aficionados of both types of Port argue which flavor is better. Tawny Port has a round, complex flavor from being aged in wood casks for a long period of time (which is what gives it the tawny color). Vintage Port is produced three times per decade and ages gracefully, accounting for its full-bodied flavor.
- Vintage Port is usually unfiltered. Sediment may form in the bottle, so decanting is necessary. Tawny Port needs no decanting.
- As of 2010, a bottle of Vintage Port can cost as little as $40, and can range upwards of $2,500. Tawny Port can be found for between $15 and $200 per bottle.
