Charleston has many historical sites, and small Fort Sumter is one of its most famous.

Fort Sumter National Monument commemorates the start of the War Between the States (Civil War) in 1861. Confederate troops fired on the Union fort on April 12, 1861. Visitors can take a ferry or private boat to the island.
