The Candidate Island Highlights
Jack wakes in the outrigger on the beach. Sayid says, "Welcome to Hydra Island." Jack asks what they are doing there and Man in Locke comes over and says that Widmore captured Jack's people and they have to go rescue them.
Jack says they aren't his people. Man in Locke tells Jack that they have to get everyone and get off the island. Jack says he'll help, but he's not leaving the island. Man in Locke hopes he'll change his mind.
Sawyer and the rest of his group are taken to the cages at Hydra Island. Seamus tells Sawyer to go in, but he won't and gets the gun from Seamus. Widmore shoots his gun and then grabs Kate as his hostage. Sawyer says he won't kill her or anyone or else he wouldn't be putting them into the cage. Widmore says that he, Hurley, and the Kwons are on the list, but Kate isn't, so he doesn't need her. Kate says not to listen to Widmore, but Sawyer gives Seamus his weapon back and goes into the cage.
Later, Kate tells Sawyer that Widmore wouldn't have shot her and he tells her how he saw the names in the cave and hers was crossed off.
The pylons lose power and they hear the smoke monster.
The smoke monster kills Seamus right outside the cage. Kate reaches through the bars and stretches, but she cannot get the key.
Jack picks up the key and lets Sawyer and company out of the cage. Kate asks what he's doing there and Jack indicates the smoke monster sounds in the distance and says, "I'm with him."
On their way to the Ajira plane, they meet Sayid. Jack says that it's alright, Sayid is with them. They go to the Ajira plane where they meet Man in Locke. He says they can't take the plane because Widmore was planning on blowing them up. Man in Locke found dynamite on the plane and there could be more. They go to the sub, but Jack says he's not going with them. At the sub, they are hit with gunfire. Kate gets shot and Jack gets her onto the sub. Sawyer asks who is still above and Jack says Claire. Sawyer radios Frank and tells him to tell the the captain to move the sub.
Jack tries to help Kate and sends Hurley to get a first aid kit, but Hurley can't find one. Jack asks Jin to get his pack and Jin brings it over. When Jack opens it, he sees a watch with a timer counting down that is connected to the C4 that Man in Locke had taken off the plane.
Hurley says he's confused. He thought Man in Locke had wanted to come with them and Sawyer says yeah, that's why he locked him out. Jack says they did exactly what Man in Locke wanted them to. Now they were all together in a confined place that they couldn't get out of. Sayid looks at the bomb and says he might be able to render it inert by pulling both wires at the same time. Sawyer says that he'll do it. Jack says that Man in Locke can't kill them, so if they do nothing, nothing will happen, the bomb won't go off. He asks Sawyer to trust him and Sawyer says he can't and pulls the wires. At first it seems okay, but then the timer counts down even quicker.
Sayid tells Jack that Desmond is in a well and where to find him. He says that Man in Locke doesn't want Desmond alive, which means that Jack needs him and Jack is the one. Then Sayid grabs the bomb and runs into the other room. The bomb goes off and water begins pouring in.
Frank runs into the other room. He sees a leaking door, which bursts open and knocks him out.
Jack gets Kate and tries to drag her out, but they realize that Sun is trapped under debris. Jack tells Hurley to get Kate out and he and Sawyer go to help Jin free Sun. Sawyer hits his head and Jin tells Jack to get Sawyer out of the sub.
Jack gets to shore with Sawyer and meets Hurley and Kate there. Kate says she couldn't find him and sobs in his arms. Jack says that Jin and Sun didn't make it off the sub and they all sob.
The Candidate Flash-Sideways Highlights
Jack is by Locke's side when Locke wakes after surgery. Jack says that while he repaired Locke's dural sac he got a look at the initial injury and Locke might be a candidate for a new procedure. Locke says no thank you.
Jack goes to see Locke's dentist, Bernard, because the hospital records say that Bernard did emergency oral surgery on Locke. Jack is surprised that Bernard was on Flight 815 with him. Bernard won't tell him anything about the accident except that there was another person with Locke, Anthony Cooper.
Jack goes to a retirement home, but is unable to get in to see Anthony because he's not family. Helen comes in and asks Jack what he's doing there. Jack asks if she knows Anthony. Helen tells Jack that he saved Locke's life and that should be enough, but Jack says it's not. She introduces him to Anthony, who is completely unresponsive. She says that he is Locke's father.
Jack goes back to Locke's hospital room. Locke mumbles in his sleep, "Push the button," and "I wish you had believed me."
Jack sees Claire outside Locke's room and takes her to a private room to talk. She asks how their father died. Jack says he was found in an alley outside a bar. She shows him a music box and says that their father wanted her to have it. She asks if Jack knows why or what it means, but he doesn't. Jack figures out that Claire was also on Flight 815. He invites Claire to stay at his house rather than in a hotel.
When Man in Locke is discharged, Jack goes to say goodbye. He says he saw Locke's father and wants to know what happened in the accident. Locke says that he'd only had his private pilot's license for a week and he wanted his father to be the first to fly with him. His father was terrified of flying, but Locke promised everything would be okay. The plane barely got off the ground and Locke doesn't know what he did wrong, but he knows it was his fault.
Jack says that when he first met Locke, Locke told Jack that his father was gone. It was hard to hear, but Jack knew he was right. Jack tells Locke that his father is gone also and no matter how much he punishes himself, it won't bring his father back.
As Locke wheels himself away Jack says he can fix him. "I wish you had believed me."
