- 1). Meet the qualifications for CHL applicants. Among these, according to the Texas Concealed Handgun Association, are that you must be at least 21 years old (18 if you have served, or are currently serving in the military). You must have a clean criminal history and be able to pass a National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) check. You must not be under a protective or restraining order. Anyone delinquent in paying court ordered fines, fees, student loans, child support, etc. is not eligible for a CHL. Also, all applicants must complete the required training at a state-approved licensing facility.
- 2). Complete a training course. The course is required to be at least 10 to 15 hours and will conclude with a written exam and a shooting test. You must pass both with a score of 70 percent or better.
- 3). Fill out and return a Request for Application. You can submit a request by mail by downloading the proper forms and dropping them off at the post office.
You can also apply online by visiting the Concealed Handgun Licensing and Instructor Certification site and completing the application. You will need a social security number, Texas drivers license or state-issued identification card and a valid credit card.
No matter which method you choose, the state will run a quick background check, and send you an application if you pass. - 4). Obtain a set of passport-style photos and have your fingerprints taken. You can get the passport photos at your local post office, and the fingerprints can be done by any local or state law enforcement agency (such as your local police station). If the agency that you attend is equipped for it, you may now submit your fingerprints electronically and they will appear in the state database.
- 5). Fill out the application packet and return it to the address listed on the paperwork. Make sure to include your passport photos and fingerprints (if they weren't sent electronically).
