Swimming pools need to be properly maintained in order to provide clean and healthy water for your family to enjoy. If you are living in Florida, you face more maintenance than those living in the north. On average, Florida swimming pools are used nine months out of the year and that means nine months of continuous maintenance.

And Florida swimming pools are often kept open all year long! That's great for families, but unfortunately the high temperatures and high humidity of Florida create the perfect environment for algae growth and the growth of other dangerous bacteria. Maintaining your pool water's health is vital. You should test your water regularly to make sure the water is properly balanced and sanitize the water regularly with granular chlorine.

Granular chlorine is a top choice of sanitizers for many Florida pool owners because it dissolves easily and quickly. You should keep your chlorine level between 1 and 3 PPM (parts per million) to help prevent algae build-up and prevent the growth of bacteria that could cause ear infections, eye infections and other medical problems.

Chlorine is available in several forms. There are chlorine sticks, chlorine tablets and liquid chlorine forms. Chlorine tablets and sticks are placed into a dispenser and dissolve over time. Liquid chlorine is often used to shock the pool before swimming season and, depending on the amount of use, throughout the summertime. It kills off germs, algae and any other bacteria that can cause illness.

To apply granular chlorine, the pool owner typically dips a large bucket into the swimming pool and fills it with pool water. After adding the required amount of chlorine to the bucket of water, the pool owner adds it to the pool water. All pool owner should make sure to read the manufacturer's directions completely and keep the chlorine stored in a dry place away from pets and children.

Swimming pool maintenance is important to assure you and your family are not exposed to bacteria that can cause illness. A clean and healthy swimming pool will give you many years of entertainment, exercise and family bonding. Nothing is more enjoyable on a long hot Florida summer day than unwinding in crystal clear water and creating wonderful memories with family and friends.
