- 1). Squeeze the rubber fuel primer bulb to check that it is pliable. If there is resistance, this could indicate that sufficient fuel is not reaching the engine and the fuel line assembly may need replacement. Check the fuel lines for any damage or kinks. Ensure that there is fuel in the tank.
- 2). Check the spark plug for corrosion or excessive dirt. Clean or replace, if necessary. A spark plug that has a gray hue is usually good.
- 3). Use a plastic squirt bottle to pour a small amount of fuel and oil mix directly into the carburetor intake if the outboard motor does not start, even after priming the fuel bulb. Pull the starter cord at the same time until the engine turns over.
- 4). Inspect all the seals, or gaskets, between the power-head and the fuel pump for any leaks or damage. The gaskets seal in the engine fluids and are approximately 1/8-inch thick. A compromised gasket could allow air into the system and create a vacuum leak.
- 5). Remove the plastic engine cowling to check the inside for any oil residue. If there is oil splatter, the rings may be bad. Have a qualified marine mechanic check this out for you.
- 6). Check for fuel leaks. Remove the fuel pump screws and prime the rubber fuel bulb. Check for any leaks from the small hole at the rear of the pump. If you notice leaking fuel, this could indicate that the diaphragm needs replacing.
- 7). Inspect the fuel pump cover for any cracks or damage. Any cracks in the cover will create a vacuum leak when attempting to prime the fuel bulb.
- 8). Remove the rubber spark plug boot and spark plug and connect the compression test gauge to check for sufficient pressure in the system. Under normal operating conditions, the reading should be between 60 psi (pound per square inch) and 90 psi. If the reading is lower than this, the rings could be worn.
