- 1). Go to AnnualCreditReport.com or call 877-322-8228 to request a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and Transunion (see Resources). The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires that each of these companies give your a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months, upon request (see Resources). Highlight the inaccurate entries so that you remember to call about each incorrect entry.

- 3). Write a letter to the credit reporting company detailing the nature of the mistake. Include your full name, address, phone number and Social Security number in the letter. Attach copies of documentation that supports your claim. Request they remove the information. The website Bankrate offers a form letter to guide you through the process.
- 4). Send the letter by certified mail. Ask for a return receipt when you mail it. This will provide evidence that the company got the letter.
- 5). Send a similar letter to the creditor or provider of the negative information letting them know that you dispute an item. Include copies of supporting documentation.
- 6). Allow the reporting agency 30 days to investigate the disputed information and send a letter detailing the findings.
- 1). Ask your creditor for a copy of the universal data form if they claim they have corrected information. The UDF is the form the creditor transmits to the credit-reporting agency to update your report. Alternately, ask they send a confirmation letter that states they notified the bureau to request a correction.
- 2). Ask the credit reporting company to send copies of any corrections made on your file to anyone who received your credit report within the last six months.
- 3). Request the credit-reporting agency put a statement of the dispute in your file and future reports.
