    Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation

    • The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation Program honors Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served in the U.S. Senate for 30 years. Its purpose is to ensure an ongoing source of exceptionally qualified mathematicians. The scholarship offers undergraduate assistance to outstanding juniors and seniors who plan to pursue mathematics as their career. Barry M. Goldwater Scholars in their junior year receive two full years of assistance, and seniors receive one full year of support. The scholarship covers expenses for tuition, fees, books and room and board for students nominated for the award by their college or university. Applicants with a minimum GPA of 3.60 must display intellectual curiosity and potential to make a significant contribution to their field in the future. U.S. citizens and resident aliens are eligible for this scholarship. As of the 2011 to 2012 academic year, the value of the scholarship was $7,500 annually.

    U.S. Department of Homeland Security

    • The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) offers the DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program for students who contribute to achieving the DHS mission as members of an outstanding science and technology community. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a cumulative 3.30 undergraduate GPA and second- or third-year full-time students majoring in mathematics. The scholarship includes a mandatory off-campus internship. An expert review panel evaluates the applications based on academic record, SAT or ACT test scores, reference reports and essays on specific topics. Recipients serve for a full year or two six-month periods in a relevant HS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field following their studies. As at 2011, the scholarship covered full tuition and fees, a $1,000 per month stipend for nine months and $5,000 for a 10-week, off-campus summer research internship.

    National Science Foundation

    • The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent U.S. federal agency that provides indirect funding for scholarships in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (S-STEM). The program offers grants to institutions in support of the scholarships. These scholarships are for academically-gifted students whose financial need is also a consideration. The institutions select the scholarship recipients and administer the S-STEM project. The NSF aims to advance knowledge, and ensure the development of scientific literacy and national research capability. The value of the scholarships is undisclosed.

    Siemens Foundation

    • The nonprofit Siemens Foundation partners with the College Board in offering the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology and scholarships to outstanding U.S. mathematicians. The object is to interest students in careers that focus on mathematics. The competition is for students in good academic standing who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The competing students participate in individual or team research projects. As at 2011, the scholarship values ranged between $1,000 and $100,000.
