More Stay-at-Home Parents of About.com

Kimberly Powell, About.com Guide to Genealogy
  • Hi! I'm Kimberly Powell, the proud mother of two beautiful children, and the Guide to Genealogy here at About.com My daughter, Kelsey, is almost 7 and thinks she is almost 17, and my son, Garrett, just celebrated his first birthday. I have been a stay-at-home mom since the day that Kelsey came home from the hospital and have never regretted one minute.
In 1999 my Web design company, Katalyst Design, was born, and this spring I took over the Genealogy site at About.com. I absolutely love working from home! I work in my pjs...I work when Garrett is napping...I work after the kids are tucked in bed for the night. My husband is a management consultant and is out of town most days, so I am very busy with my children, the house, and my work during the week. It makes for a lot of late nights! On the weekends my husband is wonderful about doing the housework and playing with the kids to give me extra time for myself. However difficult it gets to fit work around my family, however, it is what keeps me sane. Defining myself as a person outside of my family helps to keep me from living my life through my children. This, in turn, makes me a better mother.

Being a mother is my number one job, one which I am paid for in more ways than I can count. I love that I don't have to leave my home to work, that I can get up from my desk at a moment's notice to pick my daughter up from school when she gets sick, and that I am not missing my son's first steps. I can only hope that the Internet, and companies like About.com, continue to provide more stay-at-home mothers the opportunities to have the best of both worlds.

Linda Roeder, About.com Guide to Personal Web Pages

    • My name is Linda Roeder and I am the About.com guide to Personal Web Pages. I have been working for About.com since May 1998. I am the mother of 3 beautiful boys. Nicholas is 7, Alexander is 2 and Seth is 8 months old. Seth was born since I have been doing this site. I love being able to be here for my boys when they are sick and being here when Nicky gets off the bus. It also allows me the flexibility to take Alex to the doctor appointments and therapy sessions he needs and makes nursing Seth a whole lot easier than if I still worked in Accounting.
I discovered About.com while they where still The Mining Company when I was pregnant with my second son. Only after losing my job due to pregnancy descrimination did I really put my nose to the grindstone and get the position I now hold. I wouldn't give up this job for anything in the world. I love working for About.com and helping people design their very first personal Web page.
