The HVAC Benefits of a Variable Speed Furnace

    Better Air Quality

    • Because the blower can run 24 hours a day without significantly increasing utility costs, it will continuously circulate air throughout a building. When running at low speeds, variable speed blowers increase the efficiency of furnace filters and air cleaners by allowing these devices to capture more contaminants. This results in the removal of more allergens and pollutants from the air, benefiting people who suffer from allergies, asthma and similar conditions.

    Consistent Comfort

    • Another benefit of variable speed furnaces is that they maintain a more consistent level of comfort. The furnace blower and heater run at less than full power when minimal amounts of heat are needed and adjust accordingly when outside temperatures drop. This same principle works in conjunction with a building’s air conditioning unit, increasing SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) during warmer months. Temperature variances between rooms, and in some cases in an entire building, are reduced, particularly in homes that have upper floors that are cold in winter and hot in summer. In addition, variable speed systems can remove up to four times more humidity from the environment when moisture levels are high, which also reduces potential mold growth.

    Energy Efficiency

    • All manufacturers of variable speed furnaces claim that use of these units will reduce consumption of electricity as well as gas when compared with single-stage, one-speed units. Lennox suggests that variable speed motors use about 75 watts of electricity per hour as opposed to conventional blowers that use about 400 watts. Variable speed motors result in an approximate two-thirds reduction in electricity costs. Zoning, which increases or restricts airflow to certain building areas, is enhanced by variable speed technology, which even further increases energy savings. Although variable speed furnaces are more expensive than those with conventional blowers, these units pay for themselves within two to six years depending on overall annual utility savings.

    Quieter Operation

    • Variable speed furnaces have fewer on and off cycles, resulting in less maintenance over unit life. Sound-reducing design that the units to slowly build to full speed, which eliminates loud blasts of air, leading to quieter operation.
