Dust is typically comprised of allergens such as dead skin cells and hair, pollen, fabric fibers, pet dander, waste from pests and dust. Dust is unavoidable and causes allergy symptoms in a large population of people. The amount of dust in home and work environments can be reduced; however, allergies often remain. Because some allergies may require prescription medication, treatment may require the care of a physician. - The immune system of an allergy sufferer may release chemicals called histamines subsequent to being exposed to an allergen. An antihistamine works against the effects of histamine by attaching to cells that line the nose and throat that swell and leak fluids when an allergen invades the body. Oral antihistamines quickly treat runny noses, sneezing and sore throats caused by dust allergies.
- An allergy sufferer who is plagued by congestion or stopped up nose may find decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine, help. Decongestants are sold over-the-counter and come in a variety of forms, including pills and nasal sprays. By narrowing the blood vessels in the lining of the nose and minimizing blood flow, decongestants dissipate swelling, allowing air to flow. Since decongestants can cause an increase in blood pressure, patients with high blood pressure should consult a doctor before use.
- A variety of steroid nasal sprays are available for the treatment of dust allergies. The medication is administered into the nose and reduces the inflammation in the nasal tissues. Although the spray is effective in clearing clogged passages, maximum benefits may not be seen for two weeks. Steroid nasal sprays are available only by prescription. For severe allergy symptoms, the doctor may administer a steroid shot or pill to cause the treatment to enter the body more quickly.
- Immunotherapy, or allergy shots, is a form of treatment wherein a patient receives shots containing the allergen that triggers a reaction. The amount of the allergen is not enough to cause an allergic reaction but will activate the immune system. With each treatment, the immune system becomes more tolerant of the allergen and symptoms lessen. This is a good choice for people who are allergic to dust as avoiding the allergen is nearly impossible. A doctor administers the shot and observes patients for 30 minutes afterward to ensure no adverse reactions occur.
