- The biggest and most obvious way to get rid of fruit flies is to keep a sanitary kitchen (or whatever area the fruit flies are flocking to).
- Empty the kitchen trash more often.Make sure counter tops are clean of all food.
- Make sure dish rags are cleaned with soap everyday.
- Make sure sinks and garbage disposals are clean (no little chunks of food).
- Pour 1 cup of bleach down your kitchen sink. If your sink has 2 drains be sure to use both.
- Get rid of free standing water (like buckets), open soda or especially open beer cans/bottles.
- Put all fruits and vegetables in your refrigerator.
- Throw out and fruits or vegetables that may have over ripened since these flies are especially attracted to these.
- Fruit flies like anything sweet, not just fruit. Spilled liquids containing sugar anywhere in the house are a breeding ground for fruit flies.
- Sticky fly strips have been known to workCitronella candles emit a smell that these flies absolutely despise (this works for mosquitoes and other flies as well).
- Aside from the methods above these are the 2 best methods that have worked for me.
My 2 Favorite ways to get rid of fruit flies:
Method 1
Locate the source of what the flies are being attracted to and get rid of it ASAP.
- Find a small bowl (like a cereal bowl).
- Fill the bowl with about 2 inches with Apple Cider Vinegar.
- Add 3 drops of dish soap.
- Set the bowl in the area where the most flies are.
- The fruit flies are strongly attracted to the Cider Vinegar, however the dish soap kills them almost instantly and they harmlessly drift to the bottom of the bowl.
Depending on how many fruit flies you have you may want to set out more bowls. After about 24-48 hours of this you should be Fruit Fly free.
Method 2
- Get an empty 2 liter bottle and cut off the top right where the curve stops. Basically we're creating a funnel.
- Grab some duck tape and tape the top that you cut off in step 1 securely to the bottle upside down eliminating any holes except for the bottle hole opening.
- Fill the bottle half-way with something sweet (beer, soda, whatever) and add 1 tsp of dish soap.
- Flies fly in, however they're not smart enough to fly out.
Again, depending on how many flies you're dealing with you may need to create more of these bottles.
