Slip and Fall Compensation

Falls can cause many injuries, from bruises to cracked or broken bones.  If the fall was caused by unsafe (or even dangerous) conditions in a business or office, that business or office may be liable for damages and expenses.

An example of a slip and fall injury that happened to me was when I was working for a bank in the Portland area.  Someone thought that it was funny to unscrew the liquid soap container (in the ladies' restroom) from the sink surround and then pour the liquid soap all over the floor under the sink (and on the floor in front of the sink).  I wasn't paying attention after I exited the bathroom stall. I slipped and fell on the floor in the liquid soap; I injured one arm and my back.

Because slip-and-fall injuries are often faked, companies and their lawyers can be quite vicious in attempting to discredit those who are seeking slip compensation. In my case, my employer wasn't liable because they rented the office space in which I worked and the bathroom was used by all tenants of that floor of the building.  The building management and their insurance company (who would have otherwise been liable for my injuries) went out of their way to discredit me, saying that I'd poured the soap on the floor myself (even though I'd verbally warned another co-worker who was still in one of the bathroom stalls about the floor condition) and that I was otherwise lying about the incident.  However, since I was injured while at work, my state workmens' compensation insurance covered all of my medical expenses for the nine months it took for my back to heal from that slip and fall.

If you've been injured in a slip-and-fall incident, the first thing you must do after informing the business where you were injured is to get medical care immediately.  If you wait to get medical care, the business or their insurance company will try to downplay the severity of your injuries. Be sure to tell the examining doctor that you were injured in a slip-and-fall accident; they have to document what you say, and stating that you slipped and fell (give details too) is one way to cover your behind with all the involved parties

Once you've received medical care, contact the building management to see if they are willing to work with you.  Some companies will settle with you right away to avoid lawsuits, but most will drag their feet and attempt to discredit you.  Once you've determined that the company most likely will not work with you, contact a lawyer or a law firm that specializes in slip-and-fall or personal injury work.
