- 1). Choose an environmentally friendly paint stripper designed to work on brick. You'll be able to work with the product safely indoors because it lacks the chemicals of other paint strippers.
- 2). Read over all the instructions on the paint stripper before use. Typically, you apply the paint stripper by brush or roller and wait for the product to work before peeling it off. Product consistency can vary from liquid to paste. Find out how long to wait and other product-specific details. The wait period can vary from two to 12 hours.
- 3). Wear latex or rubber gloves to protect your hands while you work. With an environmentally friendly paint stripper, you do not need stronger gloves.
- 4). Coat the brick with paint stripper, dipping a paintbrush in the stripper and painting the brick directly. Apply one even layer to the brick, making sure to get the whole surface area. If you miss spots, the paint won't come off. Once you've coated the brick, wait for the paint stripper to work.
- 5). Scrape off the paint when the time is up, using a metal or plastic putty knife. The paint should peel off easily in flakes or pieces. Work over the whole area to remove all the paint. If some parts don't come up at all, try a fresh coat of paint stripper and repeat the process. If you coated the brick well at the outset, you'll be fine.
