The Origins of Mother"s Day Around The World

Mother's Day as we observe it today has a wide variety of origins, and has developed very differently in different countries.
Depending upon location and religious persuasions, Mother's Day has grown into a diverse celebration of all things maternal.
In the UK and Ireland, the celebration has its roots in the Christian liturgical calendar, specifically the observation of the Mothering Sunday occasion, usually held on the fourth Sunday of Lent and as a means to celebrate the Virgin Mary and the "mother" church.
This later evolved into the modern incarnation in which Mum's are showered with gifts and pampered for the day.
In the USA, it was a much later phenomenon, arising through the feminist belief's of Julia Howe in the late 19th century.
It was in 1909 that the International Women's Day was first celebrated in the US, a day now observed by many countries across the globe.
Many countries already had their own established versions of the holiday in place, and it is from these diverse origins that the Mother's Day event has taken shape.
For example, Islamic countries have generally annexed the Mother's Day event with their own celebration of the birth of the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad.
Alternatively, Bolivia has tied the date in with a particular historical battle (the battle of Coronilla of 1812) in which women were heavily involved.
Most countries take part in their local Mother's Day celebrations in March, April, and May, however there are various exceptions such as Panama, whose observation of the event coincides with the date of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th.
So, for those of us living within one of those countries in which Mother's Day is very soon, it's time to prepare for the big day.
It is the perfect opportunity to show your mum just what she means to you.
Whether you are a Bolivian associating Mother's Day with the bravery of Bolivian women during their War of Independence from Spain, or a Catholic merging the celebration of mothers in general with the adoration of the Virgin Mary, the time has come to begin preparations and buy some lovely gifts.
