Reactive Hypoglycemia - Tips to Beat It

Reactive hypoglycemia is a total pain! - The shakes, the fatigue, the moodiness, the hunger pangs, the crashes. So, does it always have to be such a pain to deal with? Well, the answer is no, it can be controlled naturally and without medication.

Diet is Key
To get reactive hypoglycemia under control, the bottom line is that someone suffering from the disorder must change their diet! This means eating processed foods, sugary foods, simple carbohydrates, carbonated drinks, etc. must go!

As you probably already know, when you eat foods like cake, white potatoes or ice cream, your blood sugar spikes. This causes your insulin to spike and results in you having a reactive hypoglycemic episode. And as you know, this is not pleasant! So to avoid having an episode of low blood sugar, you will most definitely want to change your diet.

You should eat foods high in protein, fiber and even a little fat is not going to hurt you. This is because fat (like protein) slows down the absorption rate of food and keeps your blood sugar from spiking. So, to be specific, foods like chicken, steak, fish, pork, cheese, yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries all are low on the glycemic index and will keep your blood sugar stable. - And remember, keeping the blood sugar stable and under control is the name of the game when it comes to this frustrating disorder.

But I Want Some Cake!

Okay, so yes, it would be very hard to go the rest of your life without another piece of cake or another cookie right? Well, that's fine. You can have sugary foods; however, don't eat them by their selves. Eat that piece of cake or those cookies after a meal that consists of fiber and protein. Again, fiber and protein will slow the rate at which your body breaks down the sugar thus not spiking your insulin and causing an episode of reactive hypoglycemia.

Exercise!

Exercise is always great for helping stabilize blood sugar. It decreases you body's need for insulin. So, exercise at least 3 times a week. - Even if it is just walking for 20 minutes each time. Exercise has many other benefits as you know like improving mood, heart health, making the brain function at higher capacity, alleviating depression and the list goes on and on.

Please understand that reactive hypoglycemia can lead to serious symptoms and eventually even diabetes.
