- 1). Select a long fishing rod on which to fish the bobber. The longer the fishing rod, the easier it is to cast a bobber that's attached more than 3 feet from the hook. While some anglers use 8- or 9-foot rods, rods between 6.5 and 7.5 feet work for most fishermen.
- 2). Cast from the highest spot on the boat or shoreline. The difficulty with casting a bobber set far above the hook is that the hook and bait sit on the ground or in the water before the cast. The higher you are, the less line there is on the ground or in the water.
- 3). Hold your rod straight up in the air when casting. This also reduces the amount of line on the ground or in the water.
