How to Receive a Copy of Bankruptcy Papers if a Creditor Is in California

    • 1). Navigate to the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) website (see Resource). PACER is a website established and run by the U.S. federal court system. Click on the "Search Now" link in the box entitled "PACER CASE LOCATOR." Click the "Need an account?" link. Fill out the requested information, including a credit card to pay for PACER download fees. Upon completion of registration, go back to the "Search Now" link on the main PACER page.

    • 2). Review the notice of bankruptcy you received from the court to determine the name of the court where the bankruptcy case is pending. For example, the notice may describe the court as "United States Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of California." Find the matching court in the PACER system, and click the link.

    • 3). Click the "Query" link at the top of the page. Enter the case number in the blank box next to "Case Number." The bankruptcy case number will be clearly visible on the notice you received from the court. Click "Run Query." The PACER system will then open the case in a new window.

    • 4). Click "Docket Report." Then, click "Run Report" on the following page that loads. Scroll down on the following webpage and click the links next to each document you wish to download. For example, you may want to click the download link next to "Chapter 7 Voluntary Petition." Note that PACER charges $0.10 per page of each document downloaded as of May 2011.
