Most women spend a lot of money trying to keep their hair looking its best. And there are women who spend tons of money getting rid of hair as well. Literally millions of dollars a year are spent getting rid of unwanted hair. If it's on their head that's great, but if it's on their face look out it has to go.

The question is why it is growing on their face and other places they don't want. I used to wonder about this when I was a little girl. You see my grandmother had a mustache and when my mom got older she grew one too. So, I began to research a bit because I was concerned that I might grow one too!

What I found was some good and some not so good news. From what I read it seems the reason my grandmother and mother had their mustache is hormone imbalance. This happened when they started going through menopause. I'm thinking great, I'll have a mustache for sure since all women go through menopause.

After I got over my feelings of 'poor me' I continued my search for why women have unwanted hair. And this is what I found. Even worse news, and that is, it's inherited, now I know I'm doomed and check closely in the mirror each day looking for signs.

Don't laugh these next few reasons might pertain to you, anyway, getting on with the search. The next thing I learned was that there are certain drugs taken for blood pressure, cancer; seizures etc that make you produce a male hormone called androgen and this is the cause of abnormal hair growth.

Other possible causes of producing androgen are stress, anxiety and tension, so try to stay calm or else you might grow a mustache. The good news is that it's treatable by taking an anti-androgen drug to get your hormones back in balance. In order for this to be possible, however, you need to catch it early, not wait 10 years and expect to reverse all the years of unwanted hair growth.

The bottom line is that if we somehow manage to get our hormones out of balance whether its menopause, drugs, stress, heredity or whatever, we need to seek medical advice as soon as possible to reverse the effects of the androgen.

That was enough research for me, my question was answered and now I know why some day I'll have a mustache.
