How to Wire Overhang Lights

    • 1). Locate a tie-in point from which to run the electrical line to the overhang light. This can be an outdoor electrical outlet for instance.

    • 2). Disconnect the breaker that feeds power to the identified electrical outlet tie-in point. Open the electrical outlet box revealing the hot (typically white) and neutral (typically black) wire leads.

    • 3). Strip the ends of the electrical wire with the wire stripper tool. This can be done by separating the black and white wires and stripping approximately 1/2 inch of the insulation revealing the bare wire. Before connecting, thread the second end of the electrical wire through the conduit. Ensure there is enough conduit to reach from the electrical outlet box to the overhang light and that the conduit can be clipped to a deck or railing.

    • 4). Attach the conduit to the deck or railing using the conduit clips. Attempt to hide the conduit by attaching underneath the railing or deck.

    • 5). Connect the two stripped wire ends to the corresponding leads on the electrical outlet. This will be two flat screws on either side of the outlet. Secure the wires with the screwdriver and close the outlet box.

    • 6). Mount the electrical switch near the overhang light. Strip the ends of the electrical wire with the wire stripper tool. This can be done by separating the black and white wires and stripping approximately 1/2 inch of the insulation revealing the bare wire. Connect the black wire to the terminal on the switch and the white wire to the white wire from the overhang light. Use wire nuts to connect two wires. This is done by twisting the metal ends around each other and screwing the wire nut in place.

    • 7). Connect the black wire from the light to the second terminal on the switch. Secure the wires with the screwdriver and attach the switch box. Turn the breaker on and test the light with the switch.
