- 1). Navigate to the section of Experian's website for online disputes.
- 2). Get a credit report from Experian, which is the only one of the three main credit reporting agencies that requires you to have a report 90 days old or less to file a dispute. You can obtain the report for free if you have not requested your yearly report or you have been denied credit. You may also purchase a credit report or credit monitoring package to get access to the Experian report.
- 3). Click "Yes, I have a credit report number" after you've picked up a report. Copy the report number and provide the other information requested on the form. Click "Submit."
- 4). Scroll through the Experian credit report that appears on the screen. Click the "Dispute this item" link next to any account that has a problem. Provide a dispute reason, when prompted, and click "Submit your dispute."
- 1). Make copies of your paper credit report and documents that support the reason you are disputing the account.
- 2). Write a dispute letter, providing your name and address, the specific items being disputed and the reason for the dispute. If you have lived in multiple locations within the last two years, include the older addresses for identity-verification purposes. If you are disputing an account on TransUnion, the company provides a specific mail dispute form on its dispute website.
- 3). Send the letter certified mail with a return receipt requested. The return receipt gives you a paper trail so you know when the dispute is received by the credit reporting agency.
- 1). Make a list of the inaccurate accounts and the confirmation or credit report number for each credit report. Experian and Equifax require you to use a credit report requested within the past 90 days for a phone dispute. TransUnion does not have any report requirements, though you need the account name and number for each disputed item.
- 2). Call TransUnion at 800-916-8800; Equifax at 800-525-6285; and Experian at 888-397-3742.
- 3). Follow the prompts once you call to reach a representative who will submit the dispute on the problematic accounts. Provide the account name, number and the specific dispute reason.
