- 1). Sand away any existing chipped or flaking paint before you start applying fresh paint. You can use coarse-grit sandpaper or a scrubbing pad.
- 2). Add a few squirts of dish soap to a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar. Use this mixture to thoroughly wash the surface after you have removed the flaking paint. The soapy water will remove any existing dirt, while the vinegar will strip away grease or oil on the surface, which can prevent the paint from adhering.
- 3). Dry the surface completely before you begin painting. Any water on the surface could thin the paint in spots and create an uneven texture.
- 4). Apply a primer before you begin painting. Primers smooth the surface so the paint will adhere evenly and create a smooth, chip-free finish.
- 5). Paint two coats of a suitable latex paint onto the surface. It's important to use exterior paint for any outdoor surfaces because interior paints often cannot withstand weather or sun exposure.
