How to Remove Tar, Grease or Rubber From a Chrome Bumper

    • 1). Clean the bumper thoroughly with a mild soap and water. Do not use an abrasive cleaner, as this may scratch the surface. Dry the bumper with a clean dry rag, which will give you a better idea of the areas of the bumper you must clean.

    • 2). Wipe a chrome and stainless steel cleaner like De-Solv-It onto the tar and rubber on the bumper. Let the cleaner soak in for a few minutes.

    • 3). Gently scrape the tar with a soft plastic paint spreader or similar plastic scraper. Do not use a metal scraper, as this will scratch the chrome.

    • 4). Spray the chrome cleaner on again, and scrub the area with a small brush (such as a toothbrush). Do not use a wire brush. Repeat until you have removed the rubber and road tar.

    • 5). Wipe a small amount of white vinegar or rubbing alcohol onto the bumper with a clean rag to remove more persistent stains. Dry thoroughly with a clean dry rag.

    • 6). Polish the bumper with a chrome polish to fully restore the shine. Apply the polish, then thoroughly buff the bumper with a clean rag.
