What to Do with Old Cabinets?

    Donation

    • Donating your old cabinets to an organization like Habitat for Humanity keeps them out of the dump and helps out a worthwhile cause. The ReStore program with Habitat for Humanity allows you to donate unwanted building and remodeling supplies like cupboards. The store then sells those items to make money for the organization's programs. Identify your local store to determine if your cupboards are in good enough condition to sell at the store. If your cabinets are in poor condition, the store likely can't use them. In this case, consider other local charities, including shelters or food pantries, that might be able to make use of the cabinetry.

    Selling or Giving Away

    • Another option for removing the cabinets from your home completely is to sell or give them away to another individual. If they still look nice, you may be able to sell the cabinetry. Post an ad online and spread the word through your network of acquaintances. If they are old or damaged in spots, give them away for free to someone who is willing to pick them up and haul them away. Post an ad online or simply place them by the curb with a "Free" sign on them if your city allows this.

    Storage

    • Instead of giving away or selling the cabinets, consider how you could use them in your own home. They may work fine in a less-visible part of the home such as the garage, laundry room or mud room. Hang the cabinetry in those areas to store tools, materials and supplies.

    Window Seat

    • If the cabinets still look nice, use them in another room as a window seat. A coat of paint helps dress them up if the finish is dull or scratched. Arrange the cabinets under a window and attach them to the wall. If you're using shorter upper cabinets, you may need to build a platform as the base to raise them higher. Cut a piece of plywood to go on top of the cabinets as the base for the seat. Cover the plywood with a cushion to finish off the seat. You will have build-in storage underneath and additional seating in the room.
