I am going to tell you one thing that I know for sure - if you leave the club face open at impact, you WILL hit weak iron shots to the right.
I promise.
There is a slight chance that if you come over the top enough you will start it left, but it will still fade back to the right.
The pitiful thing about that particular shot is that it is usually about 40% of a solid shot.
When you address the golf ball the clubface is square.
During the backswing the toe rolls open all the way to the top of the backswing.
When you reach the top of the backswing the toe is pointing towards the ground.
As you, me or Ernie starts the downswing the toe has to roll back to one degree closed.
Because the golf club is swinging at such a high rate of speed and the body is turning a little faster-you have to get that toe to cross over or it is going to return open at impact.
The reason I said that it has to return one degree closed is so you can get the full benefit of the shot.
I like to see amateur golfers draw the golf ball.
One degree closed gives you a sense of urgency that is needed in the downswing.
Now let me give you a couple of ideas that will help you get that clubface closed quicker in the downswing.
First of all, it is a long way from the top to the bottom.
When you swing the club back in the backswing, it takes twice as long to get to the top as it does to get back to the bottom.
Once you start the downswing you HAVE to begin rolling the toe over immediately.
If you do that you will not leave the Clubface open at impact.
