One of the more interesting technology demonstrations at this year's CEDIA EXPO, that I checked out, was 3D video projection at the Texas Intruments and Mitsubishi booths. Using already available DLP video projection technology, Texas Instruments has come up with a practical, and, hopefully, affordable way to provide 3D viewing in the home theater environment.
The system works by altering the way the mirrors on the DLP chip react to incoming information.
In combination with 3D-mastered material, lightweight, comfortable, polarized eyeglasses, and a PC, the effect is breathtaking. Some of the clips shown were from the Original Star Wars film and Revenge of the Sith, Chicken Little, a recent NASCAR race, and an NFL football game, that were remastered for the 3D viewing process.
Probably the most interesting detail on this development, is the fact that some DLP televisions being shipped now from Samsung and Mitsubishi, already have the capability for the 3D viewing.
For additional details, check out the Texas Instruments Announcement. Also, for more on what you need to take advantage of 3D viewing, and which DLPs now becoming available that can enable this process, check out the 3D DLP HDTV Page.
