How to Choose the Oil and Fluids for a Nissan Maxima

    • 1). Use Nissan A/C System Oil Type S or an exact equivalent as your air conditioning system lubricant. Using other refrigerant oils may cause serious damage in your air conditioning system and require its complete replacement.

    • 2). Maintain your manual transmission with API GL-4 gear oil, SAE 80W-90 viscosity only. This viscosity is suitable for operation in all but the most extreme temperatures.

    • 3). Run Nissan Matic "D" automatic transmission fluid in your Nissan Maxima's automatic transmission. Alternately, you can use DEXRON-III or MERCON and other equivalents.

    • 4). Top off your brake fluid reservoir with Genuine Nissan Brake Fluid or an equivalent DOT-3 brake fluid. You can use the same fluid in your hydraulic clutch system as well.

    • 5). Keep your car steering straight with DEXRON-III power steering fluid or an equivalent.

    • 6). Mix equal parts Genuine NISSAN anti-freeze coolant or equivalent with clean distilled water to maintain your vehicle's antifreeze protection. Expert recommendations for extreme cold temperatures vary, but most agree that not more than 70 percent coolant should go into the mix, and that a coolant-water mix performs better than pure antifreeze coolant.
