Loads of people come to Devon on holiday, but then later think moving would be a good idea.
The reasons behind this are numerous, but a lot of the time it doesn't work out.
One of the best known reasons that people move to Devon is to escape the city.
This has even been represented in television programs, with the series of books 'Down to Earth' being made into a BBC drama.
A life in the idyllic countryside is tempting to some, and they believe it will help them escape the hustle and bustle of city life, getting themselves out of the rat race and settling down on a nice farm somewhere and living off the land.
The people who think this are generally deluded.
The investments of money and time required to run a successful farm are huge, and require longer, harder working hours than the majority of jobs in big cities.
The best somebody moving to Devon could hope for is a smallholding, from which they may be able to generate a little extra revenue or grow their own vegetables and save money that way.
But they may as well just get an allotment if they want to do this.
The second best known reason is elderly people retiring to the countryside.
They are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city and want to live off their nest egg somewhere quiet and serene.
They then arrive to a cottage they have bought which lacks decent heating, has few to no transport links and is miles from even a basic shop.
There are other elderly people around them, but they have been living there for generations and their clique is impenetrable.
Eventually, they become unable to drive, and due to the limited resources of the local council, a carer can only come once every two weeks.
Eventually, the carer comes round and finds that the house's occupant has died whilst walking to the fridge, which was empty anyway.
No, moving to Devon is not a good idea if you are doing so because of some romantic notion.
Properly researching it could lead to a positive result, but if you want to come here for the quaint, country-side atmosphere and slow pace of life, it's better to just take a holiday here.
